Hello and welcome to our July newsletter.

We hope that you were able to attend the Spirit of Chellaston event on Saturday June 17th and enjoy the splendid weather, entertainment, stage performances, sideshows, stalls as well as the refreshments we had on offer in the Centre. Many thanks to the Spirit of Chellaston team who do a splendid job in organising the event and long may it continue. Our Committee members were multi-tasking as a number are involved in various groups in Chellaston so were sharing their time between the kitchen, stalls and the stage. Profits made from the refreshments will go to our Centre modernisation fund and our thanks go to our volunteers and all visitors who took the time to pop into the Centre to enjoy some refreshments, have a chat, perhaps rest those weary legs and also check out our refurbished kitchen. We have an ever growing list of improvements needed to the Centre, now 30 years old, which can only be funded through grant funding, hire receipts or fund raising initiatives and the monies we raised through refreshment sales will help our causes.

Talking of grants we have great news! – we are pleased to announce that we have been successful with our grant application to Veolia Environmental Trust and have been awarded just over £15.5k towards the refurbishment of the main lobby toilets. Improving these facilities has been one of the priorities on our modernisation list and now ensures that we can plan for this work to be carried out during the summer months when our key regular daytime hirer is taking a break for the school holiday period. We will be aiming to minimise disruption to our other regular hirers who continue to operate through the school holiday period as well as party hirers by isolating this area and requesting hirers to utilise the toilets located at the east end of the building.

The Community Association relies on volunteers to assist with many tasks that we have in running a Community Centre such as ours. As a growing suburb of Derby attracting local residents to help in some way to the operation of the centre continues to be a struggle, whether this be an hour of your time helping in the garden during the summer or joining a working party to address maintenance tasks or indeed lending a hand with some IT skills, fundraising or assisting perhaps with administration duties. If you can spare some time please get in contact through our website detailed later in this newsletter or call 07895386433 – as they say many hands make light work.

We mentioned some time ago that we were working with a web developer who had volunteered his services to create a new website for the Association. One of the key aims of the website is to provide an on line booking system for both regular and individual hirers thereby reducing the paperwork our bookings secretary Joyce has to deal with. We are happy to report that our new website address www.chellastonca.org and is now up and running and for the next few months we will continue to run our existing website address alongside this with a link to take you on to our new website. Please take a look at the new website which includes a centre calendar of events and availability, news, pictures and a frequently asked questions page. Also our facebook page provides our monthly newsletter along with photographs of our facilities. As always if you are considering hiring the Centre you can always contact Joyce on 07895386433 to check availability.

We have now submitted our application to the Charities Commission to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). A small sub-committee has worked extremely hard to develop the document which we believe is the way forward enabling our elected Management Committee to be the Trustees of the Association and furthermore overcome the concerns Trustees have regarding liability. We hope to hear in the next 3 months and if successful will aim to present this to Association members at our October AGM for ratification.
We continue to remind all Co-op members that the CCA has been selected as a worthy cause by the Co-op Local Community Fund and any monies received will be put towards the Community Centre Toilet refurbishment project. As a member 1% of your local spend on Co-op branded products is shared between the worthy causes. However you can nominate our cause specifically which over a six month period will be allocated to the Association. We hope that local residents will give consideration to opting to help our cause.
