The Committee and volunteers continue to be active in making improvements to the Community Centre, next to the library, to benefit both hirers and users of the facility. Over the Easter period we have managed to landscape the secure garden area to make it available to all hirers especially during the summer months and our thanks go out to Potters Miniskips who have been able to assist the Association. The provision of an outside storage facility has enabled one of our hirer’s garden toys to be securely stored and furthermore the re-establishment of a children’s garden close to the building will allow the Playdays Opportunity Group pre-school children to grow plants, fruit and vegetables.
Accessibility into the garden area from the main hall was identified as a problem and we have been able to address this with the construction of low rise steps together with suitable handrails for both adults and children thereby overcoming the need to walk down a grassy slope. In addition the soil around the large tree, where seating is provided, has now been replaced with ornamental bark and will hopefully overcome the previously muddy conditions that were experienced. We are also busy preparing shrubs and planters which will provide a colourful show during the summer months and our thanks also go to Swarkestone Garden Centre who have provided us with some fence mounted baskets.
The building interior has also seen further improvements with decoration to the main toilets, the large meeting room and areas of the hall. We are still waiting to hear whether we have been successful with a grant application to the Lottery Commission to replace the acoustic tiling in the hall.
We have also installed two new external signs on the building, one to the front and the other on the west end, displaying our new logo and have received some positive feedback and also some people saying that they did not realise this building was a Community Centre despite the fact that it has been in use for over 25 years.
The self contained large meeting room is now av
