A big thank you to Chellaston residents who attended the Spirit of Chellaston Event in June and took the opportunity to use the Community Centre facilities and enjoy some refreshments. We were delighted to showcase our recently transformed garden area which was an ideal spot to serve refreshments, especially with the good weather. Our thanks go to John Jackson and his team at Swarkestone Nursery who donated the flower baskets we have fixed to the fencing and to Potters Miniskips for removing the considerable amount of ground and building materials during the landscaping. Thanks also to our diy man Gary Hill for the design, manufacture and installation of the steps, pathway and foundations, Wilkinsons for providing us with a voucher for refreshment items and to Karmjit Singh of A and K Dairies for donating the milk for the hot drinks. Finally we would like to thank volunteers Peter and Ann Rice for doing some sterling work in the kitchen.
The Committee worked extremely hard decorate the Centre and to ensure suitable refreshments were available to those attending and our thanks go out to residents who provided a range of homemade cakes. The profits made from the sale of refreshments will contribute to the running costs of the Community Centre which relies entirely on hire income and fundraising initiatives to run the facility.
As you may be aware the Committee established a website for the Community Centre last year www.chellastoncommunityassociation.co.uk which provides various news items, activities, contacts and also a diary showing availability for hire. In June we recorded our 10,000th hit on the website, we continue to get numerous enquiries for the hire of the Centre and believe the creation of this website has contributed to an improving picture in the utilisation of the Community Centre and the financial situation of the Association. If you are looking to run some form of class, hold a meeting or just want to hire the Centre for a private function please get in touch via our website.
We would also like to remind all Chellaston Residents that if you are over 18 years of age you are automatically a member of the Association which owns this building on land rented from Derby City Council. It is one of very few Community Centres in the City where fundraising activities and grant provisions enabled the centre to be built by Chellaston Community Association and opened in 1988. It is therefore essential that we maintain a strong Association to ensure the viability of these facilities and indeed protecting this asset for the residents of Chellaston.
With this in mind we would like to advise everyone that on Saturday October 11th at 10.30 am the Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting which is a requirement of our Charitable Status. We would urge as many residents to attend, especially from East and West housing developments, with the aim of ensuring that we have a quorum to hold the AGM. In addition you may wish to be nominated as a committee member for the following 12 months and it would be nice to see some younger residents offering their services to the Association. We have the opportunity to elect 13 people plus a further 3 people can be co-opted at the first committee meeting. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the financial position of the Association, future plans that we have and raise any issues/concerns in relation to the Centre and the Association’s operation. We will be serving refreshments at the end of the meeting and you will have a chance to have a look around the Centre so please make the effort, the CCA is working to keep our community alive.
