Well the days are starting to draw out and the bulbs planted last year in the garden by ourselves and the Playdays pre-school nursery children are beginning to bloom which means embarking on gardening duties. The Committee has invested in a robust electric lawnmower with the intention of undertaking the grass cutting ourselves from this month onwards to ensure that the surface is suitable for outdoor use of our hirers, especially with the increasing number of party bookings we are receiving for the spring and summer months. Our intention is that we will try to cut this weekly on a Monday from 1.30pm along with other gardening tasks so if you can assist and have an hour to spare please come along.

The CCA Committee is at the planning stage for the facilities it will provide for the Spirit of Chellaston Event on Saturday 20th June 2015. The Centre and garden will be open for hot and cold refreshments and we look forward to our residents enjoying this annual event and partaking in some refreshments with our profits being ploughed back into improvements at the Centre. We are looking for volunteers who would be prepared to help out either before or at some stage during the during event, please contact us by either calling Joyce on 07895386433 or via e mail to

As mentioned in a previous article the Association relies on Centre hire revenues to cover our running costs. Only through fundraising initiatives and possible successful grant applications can we generate sufficient funds to make some of the Centre refurbishments which are needed to modernise the facility for the benefit of Chellaston residents.

The Committee has been working on various fundraising initiatives for the coming months in particular during the school holidays when the Centre is not occupied as frequently. This availability will allow us to open the main hall and our garden for various events and one of our proposals is to hold a series of weekday coffee mornings and afternoon cream tea events. We hope to be able to attract Chellaston residents to pop into the Centre for a chat and some refreshments, have a look around if you have not been in the building before and meet up with existing and new friends, neighbours and colleagues. Of course like every event such as this volunteers are always welcome as our committee is small and we still have some members who work full time. We will of course be advertising these events via posters and social media so please look out for these.

The Monday Club has been using the Chellaston Community Centre for many years. It has just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. The Club was formed in February 1995 by a small group of retired people to enjoy a social afternoon making use of the then newly acquired indoor bowls mat. The group continues, through the winter months, with a membership of around 20 people, enjoying bowls, table tennis, dominoes, word games and a cuppa. The Club meets, of course, on a Monday, 2pm to 4pm at the Centre. Subscription £2: per session. If you would like to join or need more information please get in touch with Anne Haywood on 01332-700688.
Our first booking for a family and friends winter indoor games evening took place last month and by all accounts it was an enjoyable evening for the participants. We will aim to offer this type of event mainly during the winter months and will start our promotion of this around October 2015. We also have some new regular events starting up at the Centre.

Mini Monkeys Baby & Toddler Group has started up in the hall twice weekly. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1.30 pm and welcomes parents and children to join them, for more information contact Roxanne on 07772627052.

A Rainbows group is planned to start on a Wednesday early evening after Easter. The waiting list for places grows and unfortunately the difficulty is always about finding and training sufficient leaders to run these groups. We currently have two brownie groups operating at the Centre on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

We have had an enquiry about the possibility of new dance classes starting at the Centre on a Saturday morning. More details to follow on our website as soon as we can get something formalised.

Finally just to report that one of our key hirers Playdays Opportunity Group, who operate the pre-school nursery in term time, continue to offer pre-school places for 2 year children upwards. Our Centre facilities together with the qualified staff and teachers make this an excellent venue for your child to receive the necessary pre-school education. You can check out the Centre facilities on our website www.chellastoncommunityassociation.co.uk and obtain information on Playdays via their Facebook page or by contacting them on 07842097445.
