Hello and welcome to our June newsletter.

We are hoping that this month will not only be an extremely busy period in the Chellaston calendar with the Spirit of Chellaston event but also that we hear whether we have been successful in our grant applications for modernisation improvements to the Centre.

Our team has been working hard to prepare not only the refreshment menu for the event but also to ensure the Centre is in good shape with the hope that we can serve refreshments in the garden. We are extremely grateful to John and the team at Swarkestone Nurseries who once again have provided the hanging basket displays which annually we mount on our garden fence throughout the summer months for the benefit of our hirers and visitors. We continue to look for volunteers to help in the garden, normally a Monday afternoon during the summer months, so if you have green fingers or would like some gentle exercise pushing our electric lawnmower please give us a call on 07895386433 or send an e mail to enquiries@chellastoncommunityassociation.co.uk.

The Spirit of Chellaston event on Saturday 17th June 2017 starting at 12 through to 5pm on the recreation ground is the major event in the calendar for Chellaston when the Community gets together to showcase a wide variety of activities, stalls and sideshows along with the on stage performances. I am sure you will find advertising around the village detailing more information or indeed by visiting the Spirit of Chellaston facebook page. Please come and visit us in the Centre for some refreshments and to use our facilities. We will of course be offering for sale the traditional hot dogs, filled rolls, homemade cakes, hot and cold drinks with profits going towards our Centre improvement projects. Just a further reminder that Chellaston History Group will showcase a continuous loop of photographs of old Chellaston in a cinema type environment using one of our adjoining Community rooms adjacent to the main hall. This will include some photographs of the Community Centre being built 30 years ago so an opportunity to view the changing face of Chellaston and show newcomers what our “village” was like.

The Centre is hired out for individual parties mainly at weekends throughout the year and if you perhaps are looking for a venue for a child’s party or perhaps a special occasion or games evening then you will have the chance to view our facilities on the day or check out our website www.chellastoncommunityassociation.co.uk, our facebook page or indeed give Joyce a call on 07895386433.

We mentioned last month about receiving grants from both the Co-op and Persimmons and have now purchased and installed our new notice boards in the lobby area along with some leaflet dispensers. Also we have purchased 12 small folding tables suitable for our hirers to use with small children. These will replace some fairly old and cumbersome fixed tables and provide an easier means of setting up and also storage. Our thanks once again to our grant providers mentioned above.

Finally we have been selected as a worthy cause by the Co-op Local Community Fund and any monies received will be put towards the Community Centre Toilet refurbishment project. How it works is that every time members buy Co‑op branded products and services, from buying a loaf of bread to planning a funeral, 1% of their spend goes to a local causes such as ours.

Starting from April 2017 for the next 6 months we are part of the fund which we hope will build up. Throughout the 6 months period members can choose which cause their contribution goes to and we hope that local residents may opt to help our cause. We will receive funding at the end, if members don’t choose a cause during the 6 months we will share the contribution they’ve built up equally between various selected causes in the community. So far our current total for Chellaston Community Centre Toilet Refurbishment, including money from sales of carrier bags that was added at the start, is £616.
